Nov 21, 2024

Essential oils are volatile and fragrant substances extracted from the flowers, leaves, stems, roots or fruits of plants through distillation, cold pressing or solvent extraction. And because of their unique fragrance and some special auxiliary functions, they are loved by more and more people. Can all essential oils be used on the body?

Essential oils that can be used directly on the body

1. Some mild essential oils

  • Lavender essential oil is relatively mild. It has many functions such as soothing nerves and helping sleep. Putting 1-2 drops of lavender essential oil on the pillow before going to bed can help relax the body and mind and improve sleep quality. Because the chemical composition of lavender essential oil is relatively safe, it is less irritating to the skin.

  • Tea tree essential oil also has certain antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. When there are minor inflammation problems such as small acne on the skin, applying a small amount of tea tree essential oil (usually with a cotton swab to apply a little essential oil) can play a certain auxiliary therapeutic role.

2. Diluted essential oils

  • Many essential oils need to be diluted with base oils (such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, etc.) if they are to be used for body massage and other purposes. For example, rose essential oil has good beauty and skin care effects, but its concentration is very high, and direct use may cause skin allergies and other problems. Rose essential oil is usually diluted in a base oil at a lower ratio (such as 1-2%), and then used for facial massage or body care, which can moisturize the skin and improve skin color.

Essential oils that cannot be used directly on the body

1.Essential oils containing toxic ingredients

  • Some essential oils contain toxic ingredients, such as bitter almond essential oil. Bitter almond essential oil contains cyanide, which is a highly toxic ingredient. If bitter almond essential oil is directly used on the body, it will cause poisoning, symptoms such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, and even life-threatening in severe cases.

2.Essential oils that are prone to allergic reactions

  • Some essential oils have complex ingredients and are prone to allergies. For example, although chamomile essential oil can soothe sensitive skin for many people, for some people with allergic constitutions, direct use may cause allergic phenomena such as skin redness, swelling, itching, etc.

3.Irritating essential oils

  • Essential oils such as cinnamon are highly irritating. If applied directly to the skin, it may cause skin burns, especially in sensitive areas of the skin (such as the face, near mucous membranes, etc.). Its irritation is mainly due to the chemical components it contains, such as cinnamaldehyde, which can irritate the skin.
